I was walking through Costco a while ago and was looking in the book section for a book for my friend for her birthday. I happened to see the cover of this book and I was like hey this is a cool cover, then I read about it and was like that sounds interesting and it is going to be a series not just one book (my friend really likes series books, as do I). Well we ended up not getting a chance to meet up after I bought it and I had about a month until we had a chance to meet up again (she lives in a different state) so I thought hey we share books she won’t mind if I read this one, so I did. Man am I glad I did! I loved it!

Here is the description before I get too far into my review:

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now. Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them—whether she wants to or not. Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home… forever.

I thought this concept of this book was great, it is something different than what I has been published lately. I know there are time travel ones out there but you don’t see that many and this one has a twist to it that others don’t. I liked that there are different portals to different time periods. I like that there are rules that you can’t go to the same one because I am always like well wait what if they see themselves then what happens! I love that there was romance, humor, action, and that it kept you guessing what was going to happen next. I felt that the author, Alexandra Bracken, has a great writing style and I enjoyed it.

I think Nicholas and Etta are great main characters and mesh so well together. I like knowing that they both have feelings for each other and are letting that show every once in awhile. I like that they are a mixed race, you see that more now obviously but I feel you don’t really read a lot of books with that. I like that there is hope for them in the future and that he would be willing to give up his idea of sailing on the seas to travel with her to be together. They are both playing each other and they both get that. I enjoy that there is so far not a love triangle and I hope there isn’t. I get so invested in someone and then a love triangle happens and I get all antsy to see if the character ends up with who I think they should be with so this was a nice reprieve from that.

I am anxiously awaiting the next book to come out and will not want to put it down when it does! The ending was so exciting and unexpected I just can’t wait to see how that plays out. (I won’t mention that part because I don’t want too many spoilers)

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
