Book Description: Sophia Donovan had it all: a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills, a successful career at a high-profile celebrity magazine, amazing friends – and she was married to one of the hottest Hollywood Directors of their time. Things between her and her husband Marcus weren’t perfect but after 11 years, what marriage was? But if the secrets that lay behind the walls of the Donovan home were ever exposed life would never be the same for anyone.
When an unexpected visitor from Sophia’s past shows up, it forces her to come to terms with her suspicions. As she unravels the truth about the people closest to her, it quickly becomes clear that fighting to save her marriage won’t be nearly as important as fighting to save her life.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this book was pretty good. I think it was fun that the series is called Hollywood Lies, so it is like the dark side of Hollywood and what we don’t see, well I guess sometimes the media catches it in real life, but we know there is more we don’t see. I think the reality of Sophia and Marcus’s marriage is that it was not good way before the 11 year mark that it had hit. I think it was great that she finally stood up for herself, but should have been done before. I know that is what we all say when we aren’t in that situation though, but yes this is fiction.
I think the idea behind the story was interesting, the fact that she met and married a director, he swept her into a life she hadn’t expected and then it doesn’t turn out great is a typical story, however then she swings it around to where Sophie sticks up for herself and gets rid of her husband and best friend who are plotting to kill her. What is interesting too is that the story goes from present to past, and I thought that was well done, it was not confusing and made sense. It was kind of suspenseful in a way because you are like wait you left me on a cliff hanger in this time and switched to the other.
I figured out from the beginning pretty quickly who was helping Sophie get away with what she did, but I thought they did a good job of hiding it from others. The twist at the very end about who was hired to kill her though was pretty shocking. I thought the writing was good, the characters were pretty good, I can’t say I was super connected to any of them though. I mean I was rooting for Sophie but she didn’t really draw me in to where I was completely with her, because lets face it what she did was wrong. However, I did think she described the way Sophie felt with always being worried about her husband very accurate to how it really would feel, I definitely felt for her in that situation because it does happen in real life to people.
I am definitely curious to read the second one and learn more about Caleb and his background and hopefully how things are going to go for him and Sophie. I thought the book has some good suspenseful moments and some funny moments worked together. Overall it was a fun read and I am glad I had the opportunity to read it and look forward to the next.
