Let me just say reading this was a lot of fun! I felt like it was Hunger Games meets The Maze Runner meets Divergent. However, to me overall this was better than some of those, meaning I thought the third book in this series was better than the third book in the rest. I also just saw on Goodreads today that he is going to continue the series with Iron Gold and am very excited about that. Hopefully it is as good as this series was.
Let me start with Red Rising, at first I kind of felt like the Maze Runner with them saying like “my good man” all the time just like in Maze Runner there was something they said that I at the moment can’t remember that really annoyed me. However, I got over it and they used it less. I thought the premise of this story was very good, it was a different from the other books like this in many ways and just had a more almost grown up feel to it. I really liked the characters, I felt like I cared what happened to Darrow, Mustang, and Servo and the rest. The whole carving situation was just crazy to think about what they did and how the society was in this new world. I thought it was cool that people were living on the planets and that Earth was this like planet that was still there, but not the main planet anymore.
When we got to Golden Son I was like okay how is this going to play out, is Darrow going to get found out right away, is he going to be able to complete his task, are him and Mustang going to get together, what is going to happen with him and Cassius?! So many questions and it just made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. There were parts that were a little annoying like when he would get depressed about things and start questioning if he was going to be able to do it and just almost feeling bad for himself. I am very happy that he got to see his family again and that the rebellion is actually beginning to take shape and he isn’t just sitting hanging out with the Golds. It was definitely a shocker the betrayal that happened in this book and the people that died, I won’t get too much into it don’t want to ruin it for anyone.
In Morning Star Darrow was pretty broken and not the same man he was in the first two, but he slowly gets himself back, but also remains true to who he was as a Red as well. Which is good because I was like come on man stop being a baby and just get this rebellion going and over with. I was worried him and Servo weren’t going to be able to figure things out and that they would not be friends and I was going to be like no don’t break up the friendship! Luckily I was not disappointed. I think everything that ended up happening in this book was very good and it played out well. I was definitely upset when Cassius all of a sudden betrays them again and it seems like things are going downhill again for Mustang, Darrow, and Servo, but then I was like is this true and then bam it turns out Cassius was actually going to do something good for once and all was okay again and I didn’t have to text my friend and say ahhh I hate this book and what happened to them! I thought the ending turned out well and it kept me wanting more. I want to know what happened to him and how it plays out with Mustangs big reveal at the end of the book! But now with Iron Gold coming out next year I might get to!
So yes I would definitely recommend this series and I think it would be an awesome movie, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t make one eventually.
