I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thought that this was an overall good book. It was a fresh take on angels and demons and I liked that. It kept me entertained trying to figure out what was going to happen and was intrigued with how the story came together. I like that you are seeing this take on how these Windborns are actually basically fallen angels. However, I must admit I did get confused at times when it was being explained how they were born and how the hybrids are made, why they are sold and that type of stuff. The rest of the story though I thought was clear and was able to understand and get into.
I thought it was interesting how Azrael just wanted to not have to be married or sold to someone and then she wishes on her demon orb for a chance and that chance is all of a sudden becoming queen of Terra and not just Terra but with the chance of becoming queen of Celestia. She is only 16 and thrust into this right away and has to go through this three trial Acceptance where she will have to have divine material tattooed on her and she will either pull through and become queen or die. It is cute that already Gabriel is protective of her and you kind of knew from the start there would be some kind of romantic connection with him.
I thought Azrael’s relationship with the Queen was sweet because she sees her as a mother figure. At first I was worried because the Queen was upset when Azrael wanted to figure out what was happening to the female Windborn after they were sold and then trying to learn more about why they are disappearing, which we don’t find out, but I have a feeling will find out in the next book. So I am curiously awaiting to see what happens there! It will also be interesting because Azrael is now not queen of Terra but of Celestia because of her wings and so she won’t be on Terra to enact the change of selling Windborn and finding out what is happening!
I think this was a great setup for the rest of the story and that it is very interesting. I am invested now in knowing what happens with Azrael and rooting that there is a way she can be with Gabriel. I am really sad that I won’t get to see more of her and Merretta because I thought they would have been a great team, but am glad she got that last moment to speak with her and get some peace with that. I think Azrael has a lot to learn about all of her powers and what she can do with them. It is obvious that times are changing in this story because demons can go places they used to couldn’t, it will be interesting to see what all changes in the next book.
Again I thought this was a great story, it was different than the other angel/demon books. I thought the characters were well thought out and I could relate to them and wanted to know what happened to them. I am excited to see what plays out in the next installment.
